In the Event of a Strike

In the event of a strike, Rockdale VAPA Magnet will remain open with regular school and office hours.  Instruction will take place, and there will be staff on site for the safety of our students. YS and YDP activities will continue daily, and we will continue to provide meals for students.  LAUSD will also send out additional personnel to support with safety and instruction.  We remain optimistic that UTLA and LAUSD will reach an agreement.  We will continue to keep you updated through our phone blasts, emails and texts, as this is a fluid situation.

Rockdale VAPA Magnet Ranks #5 on in the LAUSD's Arts Equity Index

In a LA Times  article, it was reported that "Research shows that arts education bolsters student achievement and contributes to stronger participation in student activities."  Rockdale is proud to rank #5 out of just 35 schools in LAUSD to receive an "A" rating on LAUSD's Art Equity Index.  At Rockdale, our entire community is committed to making sure that the arts is an integral part of our students' education.  http://schools.latimes.com/en/grading-the-arts/

Octavia E. Butler Pilot Project with The Huntington

Octavia E. Butler (1947–2006) was a renowned, award-winning, local, African American, female science fiction writer.  Her papers have resided at The Huntington since 2008. The Huntington’s Education Department worked with our entire student body on a creative art project in which the students became the illustrators of Octavia E. Butler’s work. In addition, our fifth and sixth graders worked with The Huntington’s educators on a science fiction writing project, using Butler’s work as inspiration for their own writing. Want to know more about this unique, learning experience? Please check out the post in Verso,  the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens' blog . We thank The Huntington for their generous, ongoing support. Every student at Rockdale visits The Huntington annually.

The visual arts, vocal and instrumental music, drama and dance are discretely taught at each grade level, and are also integrated throughout the curriculum.
