Rockdale VAPA Magnet Ranks #5 on in the LAUSD's Arts Equity Index

In a LA Times  article, it was reported that "Research shows that arts education bolsters student achievement and contributes to stronger participation in student activities."  Rockdale is proud to rank #5 out of just 35 schools in LAUSD to receive an "A" rating on LAUSD's Art Equity Index.  At Rockdale, our entire community is committed to making sure that the arts is an integral part of our students' education.  http://schools.latimes.com/en/grading-the-arts/

Octavia E. Butler Pilot Project with The Huntington

Octavia E. Butler (1947–2006) was a renowned, award-winning, local, African American, female science fiction writer.  Her papers have resided at The Huntington since 2008. The Huntington’s Education Department worked with our entire student body on a creative art project in which the students became the illustrators of Octavia E. Butler’s work. In addition, our fifth and sixth graders worked with The Huntington’s educators on a science fiction writing project, using Butler’s work as inspiration for their own writing. Want to know more about this unique, learning experience? Please check out the post in Verso,  the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens' blog . We thank The Huntington for their generous, ongoing support.

What is the SBAC?

Every Spring, students in grades 3-6 in LAUSD take part in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium(SBAC) assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and math.  The Smarter Balanced Practice Test and the Training Test provide students with a preview of test questions aligned to the academic standards.  These resources can help students prepare for the Spring assessments, and also give you a glimpse into what these tests look and feel like. The Practice Tests are available in each grade and are given in a similar format and structure to the actual test.  (Login information in not required to access the Practice and Training Tests.)  You and your child can access the Practice and Training tests here.

Research indicates that the arts lead to greater academic progress as well as social and emotional growth in students.  That is why the Rockdale Visual & Performing Arts Magnet community is committed to weaving the arts and standard curricula together to create a richer and more meaningful learning experience for our students. The visual arts, vocal and instrumental music, drama and dance are discretely taught at each grade level, and are also integrated throughout the curriculum.
