Message From Our Principal

We are looking forward to a productive and exciting  2018-19 school year as Rockdale embarks on its fifth year as a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet.  This is my second year as Principal at Rockdale, and my fifth year as a member of the staff.  At Rockdale we go beyond test scores to measure our students' success. While we have a visual and performing arts focus, it is imperative that we educate the whole child - to ensure not just the academic success of our students, but also their social and emotional well-being.

We have a lot to look forward to as we continue provide our students with a safe and nurturing school environment, rigorous learning in all academic areas, and quality instruction in and through the arts.  We are focused on developing students who are proficient readers, writers, critical thinkers, and curious life-long learners.  Most importantly, we hope to provide our students with multiple opportunities to create their own meaning.  By fostering a community within our school where authentic arts integration takes place, we can meet and exceed expectations set by the Common Core and support a culture of true inquiry and learning.

The arts program – in all arts' disciplines – is alive and well at Rockdale, and our students benefit greatly from having a well-rounded curriculum. Our fabulous credentialed arts teachers provide students with instruction in Drama, Visual Arts, Vocal and Instrumental Music, and Dance.  Our FocusFish physical education program opens up the world of dance, movement, Capoeira, hip-hop and physical education to our students. LA Opera returns to Rockdale to infuse performance arts into the fourth grade social science curriculum.  We are fortunate to continue our partnership with the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, which includes exciting field trips, presentations, teacher professional development, and a Family Day and free admission for families to visit the galleries and gardens. We have a new partnership with Inner-City Arts (ICA), where our third and fifth graders take weekly field trips to the ICA studios to do ceramics, dance, filmmaking and using tools and various materials in their Creativity Lab to create works of art. Barnsdall Art Park has a residency program at Rockdale this year, working with our sixth graders, incorporating art, mindfulness and yoga.  Finally, we continue our Garden School Foundation partnership, where students in the lower grades learn about planting, harvesting, healthy nutrition and responsibility for the Earth.

Classroom teachers work collaboratively to bring the ArtsWheel program to our students, as well. The ArtsWheel lessons ensure that every student has on-going and consistent instruction in the foundational skills of the various arts disciplines.  Classroom teachers  integrate these processes into the teaching and learning of grade level curriculum and standards.

Parents, thank you for your continued support and enriching our program through your involvement in our PTA, committees, volunteerism and fund-raising. Thank you also for continuing to set high standards for your child's behavior at home and at school and for continuing to encourage and support their academic responsibilities and thirst for learning. My deepest gratitude to all of you for your support and encouragement. It's important that your children see the home and the school as a team, working together to help them succeed.

ROCKDALE ROCKETS ROCK!
