Get Involved

Parents are essential partners in their child's education. There are many ways that you as a parent can support Rockdale and our student community. We invite you to volunteer and join our many parent participation groups.

School Site Council (SSC)

The School Site Council is a decision-making council composed of teachers and parents, that works with the principal to develop, review, and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets. This is a great way to learn what is happening at school. Orientation and elections are held within the first six weeks of the school year. The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month, in the afternoon.

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

The English Learner Advisory Committee advocates on behalf of English Learners and helps develop strategies and policies to help students learning English as a second language. The group works closely with the SSC making recommendations to improve programs and advising on budgetary issues. Orientation and elections are held within the first six weeks of the school year. The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month, in the  afternoon.

Safety Valet

Help us keep our children safe by volunteering as a Safety Valet during morning drop-off in front of the school. The Safety Valet Program was designed by the City of Los Angeles in conjunction with the LAPD and DOT to improve safety and traffic flow efficiency in school zones. We rely on our wonderful volunteers to facilitate the program every day of the week. To volunteer, it just takes 15 minutes, one day a week.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

Our Rockdale PTA advocates for the welfare of our students, organizes fundraising events essential to many of our programs, and plans many fun gatherings. We need your support. For more information, please see our PTA page.

After-school Clubs

Rockdale parents have enriched our students lives with after-school clubs, sharing their talents, interests and expertise. Past clubs have included French, Spanish, gardening, sculpture, percussion, cooking, writing, chess and guitar. Please consider volunteering to lead a club.

In the Classroom

Parent volunteerism in the classroom is determined based on need, as determined by each teacher. Often times parents help organize activities as room parents, assist with small group instruction, lead special projects,or act as chaperones on school field trips.

Title I: School-Parent-Student Engagement

Rockdale VAPA Magnet School-Parent-Student Compact

The 2016-17 School-Parent-Student Compact reviewed by our School Site Council (SSC) at our October 18, 2016 SSC Meeting and approved by our SSC on January 17, 2017.  This Compact is an agreement that parents and teachers develop together, and explains how we will work together with students to reach or exceed grade-level standards.

Rockdale VAPA Magnet Parent Involvement Policy (PIP)

The School Site Council developed a written Title I Parental Involvement Policy (PIP) with input from Title I parents (through a survey). The policy was developed collaboratively amongst the teachers, staff and parents during our Title I Meeting in October 2016 and January 2017.  The policy describes the means for carrying out the following Title I parental involvement requirements [20 USC 6318 Section 1118(a)-(f) inclusive].

The COMPACT and the PIP were distributed school-wide to all parents in January 2017.  Rockdale VAPA Magnet is a Schoolwide Title I School. The Compact and the PIP the were sent home to parents, posted on the school’s website, and are available in the front office.
